Buying
a second hand boat.
There are several things you can do to check
a boat yourself when buying a second hand boat.
1. Ask questions.
If you ask these questions then the owner is
likely to tell you the truth. If they say they
don't know - then it is likely that the question
you have asked is true.
Ask;
- how many owners it has had since new.
- how long the current owner has had it for.
- if it has had any accidents
- if it has any problems.
- ask if it burns any oil. Ask how often they
have to add oil to the motor.
2.
Check out the paint work.
Make sure you look at the boat during the day.
At night - it will be hard to see any imperfections.
Check out all the panels and make sure that
they are all the same in color consistency and
clear coat.
3.
Check the panels.
Check for overspray to see if there has been
any repainting of the boat.
5. Check all the accessories.
Make sure the windows, lights, stereo etc etc
all work properly. Take the time to check them
all. If you find faults then this is a good
negotiation tool when haggling over the price.
4. Take the boat for a drive
Try it at several speeds. Make sure you drive
it at 100 klms per hour. This is the ideal speed
to make sure there are no major problems.
5. Check the registration
See how much registration is left on it and
ask if it has a registration certificate.
6. Haggle over the price
Lastly make sure you haggle over the price.
