Buying
a second hand car.
There
are several things you can do to check a car
yourself when buying a second hand car.
1.
Ask questions.
If you ask these questions then the owner is
likely to tell you the truth. If they say they
don't know - then it is likely that the question
you have asked is true.
Ask;
-
how many owners it has had since new.
- how long the current owner has had it for.
- if it has had any accidents
- if it has any problems.
- ask if it burns any oil. Ask how often they
have to add oil to the motor.
2. Check out the paint work.
Make sure you look at the car during the day.
At night - it will be hard to see any imperfections.
Check out all the panels and make sure that
they are all the same in color consistency and
clear coat.
3. Check out all the tyres.
Make sure the tread is wearing evenly. Make
sure all tyres are the same brand and that the
spare is in good condition.
4.
Check the panels.
Get down low and check the alignment of all
the panels. The gaps between each panel should
be the same. If any of the gaps are significantly
different - chances are the panels have been
replaced. Check for overspray to see if there
has been any repainting of the car.
5.
Check all the accessories.
Make sure the windows, lights, seatbelts, wipers,
stereo etc etc all work properly. Take the time
to check them all. If you find faults then this
is a good negotiation tool when haggling over
the price.
6.
Take the car for a drive
Ttry it at several speeds. Make sure you drive
it at 100 klms per hour. This is the ideal speed
to make sure there are no major problems.
7.
Check the registration
See
how much registration is left on it and ask
if it has a registration certificate.
8.
Haggle over the price
Lastly make sure you haggle over the price.
